Make no mistake about it, I have had rough experiences throughout my career but God has kept me as I’ve gone through each one of them. This is one of those times....
The pictures show me presenting before a large audience of my industry peers at the annual Texas A&M symposium. A couple days before these were taken, I contracted an eye infection and my eye lid was nearly swollen shut. I had work my whole career for a moment like this one but I was seriously considering throwing in the towel. I asked God to bring down the swelling but when I woke up the day of the presentation, my eye was still in bad shape. My self talk told me that I was going to make a fool of myself and that everyone was going to be distracted because of the condition of my eye. Then I remembered that time when my luggage was lost the night before a big job interview and I had no clothes to wear while in a small East Texas town I knew nothing about. I also got lost trying out find to the hotel but then stumbled upon a 24 hour Walmart 7 hours before my interview. God had made a way when I had no way. I purchased a Walmart outfit and went in that plant a few hours later and got the job. But I digress, I threw on my back-up eye glasses because I couldn’t wear my contacts and I drove to College Station so that I could represent myself, my team and my company. I switched up my self talk and said “Hell by the end of the week, no one will even remember what happened during the symposium let alone that I had a swollen eye”. Long story short, my co-presenter and I killed it! I can remember all of the folks lined up to speak to us afterwards, it was like we were famous. That presentation and that moment was a major career milestone for me that led to many other conferences and award ceremonies.
The moral of the story is, 1) don’t put your own self in a box, 2) trust God always and 3) never give up!
